Newsletters

If you’re trying to get your business message ‘out there’ – to customers, prospects and the general public, my guess is that you’ve already given some thought to the idea of designing an e-mail newsletter for your business. If you have, you’ll no doubt have looked at some of the online e-mail newsletter services available and the email newsletter software that can be run via your desktop.

There are some great products and services out there, Internet based offerings from Aweber and Constant Contact – Desktop email newsletter software from Groupmail – and many, many others too!

The problem doesn’t seem to be finding the software or products to get started with your newsletter – The issue seems to be choosing the system that’s exactly right for you.

For many years I’ve worked with both the Aweber autoresponder system, and the Constant Contact online email newsletter service. Both are great and each has a particular feature set that makes it more suitable than the other for use in particular business situations – I haven’t yet found a ‘one size fits all’ solution.

My experience in setting up these systems (and creating bespoke solutions too) includes helping with writing the content of the letters and actually running them month on month for various businesses. The knowledge gained has led me to believe that there’s nothing straightforward about setting these things up!

The whole idea of marketing is that it runs as a part of the business process – but when you first start out creating your own newsletters, it feels like the email marketing process is running you! If you’re not careful, the process becomes just another business chore and because it’s a chore it gets put on the back boiler, delayed or postponed, until eventually it dies a lingering death.

I guess nobody told all the budding authors and self publishers of failed newsletters how hard it is to be consistent with publication dates, or how tricky it would be to write copy that was interesting for their readers. I’ve spent years doing it for my own and other people’s businesses and I’d like to let you into the secret of success.

Persistence:
Without persistence you won’t build a great email list of subscribers, without persistence you won’t develop a loyal following of readers who actually read your email newsletter before clicking the delete button, and without persistence you won’t get the return on investment (ROI) of both time and money spent working on the project.

Overcome the problems however and you can say ‘hello’ to loyal customers, more profitable ventures and vastly reduced advertising and marketing costs.

When an email newsletter takes hold for a business, it’s like having a silent salesman working 24/7 for you. Your reputation is enhanced and your profits grow – but only with persistence!
