Getting Started ‘one byte at a time’

squarelogoIf you are just setting up a new business, or are thinking about marketing your existing business online, making the first moves towards an online marketing strategy can appear somewhat daunting – to say the least.

The good news is that you don’t have to do everything at once!

If the project is planned around a few simple stages, good results can be obtained fairly quickly at reasonable cost, in terms of both time and money.

Marketing online has developed into a number of distinct channels – some of which will be useful to your business – others will be less valuable.

Before you start to get confused with Twitter, Facebook MySpace and all the other ‘must have’ networking platforms ask yourself a few basic questions.

What is the purpose of my online marketing?

  • To Generate Leads?
  • To Sell directly via E Commerce?
  • To Offer Customer Support?
  • To Raise the profile of my business?

Is my website performing correctly?

  • Are we getting enquiries or sales?
  • Do we know where our visitors come from?
  • Are we updating our site regularly?

How easy is it for web site visitors to contact us?

  • Do we have contact details on every page?
  • Do we have clear simple forms to collect leads?

Since the purpose of most online marketing is to drive visitors to your web site – it makes no sense to start creating campaigns that lead them to a poorly functioning resource. It’s imperative to get your web site working properly BEFORE you start looking at more direct marketing routes!

I recommend websites built using WordPress – The industry standard blogging platform – not only are they attractive and functional; they can be updated easily by anyone with Internet access. Sites built using this software platform are also very ‘Search Engine Friendly’ in fact many people would say that Google ‘loves’ WordPress.
